Spin Around Waitaki 2024 is set to be another fantastic weekend of learning and turning, and of course another opportunity to catch up with fellow turners/friends and to meet some new ones.

We are excited to confirm that our guest turner for this year is Simon Begg.

Simon is a full-time wood turner from Sydney, Australia. He has been turning for 14 years, now specialising in German ring turning, carved embellishment and bowl turning. He has demonstrated at Turnfest multiple times as well as some teaching in the USA and is the lead turning teacher for Timberbits. Simons favourite jobs are the unique one-off pieces that most people would turn down as the challenge to make something special and challenging really appeals. He has also worked with 205 species of wood which has developed his abilities behind the lathe.

A simple online search will take you to plenty of examples of Simon’s amazing work.

     Affordable Accommodation

For those who don’t mind staying in dormitory style accommodation, you may be able to stay at the Waitaki Girls High School hostel in a dormitory (not one used by the students).

The prices are (GST inclusive, per night):

    • Full bedding = $ 51.75
    • Flat sheet with own bedding = $ 46.00

NOTE:  this year the hostel has a minimum numbers requirement, which is 15 guests. Unfortunately, this may rule this option out unless people in clubs are interested in making group bookings. Please contact Geoff by return email if you are interested.
